What with gas prices being as high as they were this summer, we didn’t go on as many road trips as we would have liked to. If we had a camper like the Verdier Solar Powered Camper, we definitely would have embarked upon more road trips to beautiful National Parks and done it in eco-style. Verdier’s eco-RV is based upon a classic VW Westfalia that has been upgraded with many green elements, like a hybrid engine, solar panels and a lot of high-tech systems that makes this bus a hippy’s Pimp My Ride dream come true. …read full discussion

Solar-Powered Monte Rosa Alpine Hut

This remote alpine retreat calls to mind classic James Bond architecture, complete with a futuristic design, advanced building technology, and killer views of the Matterhorn. Can’t you just see Bond skiing down the glacier in a white ski suit, stealthily approaching his enemy’s headquarters? You could imagine that the top of the roof pulls down to reveal a giant laser, which is used as a tractor beam to smash the moon into Earth as the villain demands 700 million 700 billion dollars from the US Government. Oh wait, sorry, we’ve been having nightmares about the economy. But seriously though, this hut outside of Zermatt in the Swiss Alps is for real. It’s the Swiss Alpine Club’s new Monte Rosa mountaineer’s hut, and it’s 90% energy self-sufficient. …read full discussion

Xantrex Xpower Solar Powerpack

Xantrex Xpower

Look out the window. See all that? See it? That, my friend, is electricity going to waste. Solar power is the new green, and you can get a piece of it to feed your gadgets with this solar powerstation thingy from Xantrex. It’s got a detachable (whatever that means) 5 watt solar panel that charges an integrated 10 amp-hour battery. You can plug your stuff directly into a couple standard 120 volt wall sockets, a 12v socket, or even a USB port. A little LCD lets you monitor the status of the battery, and for those of you who live in Oregon, it comes with an AC adapter to charge it the old fashioned way. …read full discussion

Solar Powered Air

Apple Juicz

Yesterday I wrote about a solar power pack that wasn’t quite powerful enough to run things like laptops. If you really must have a solar powered laptop, and that laptop is a MacBook Air, QuickerTek’s Apple Juicz will get the job done. In spite of the horrendous misspelling of the word “juice,” the product seems pretty solid. It’s a fold out solar panel that expands from a 10.5 inch square into a 5 foot by 3.5 foot array capable of generating up to 55 watts of electricity, which is easily enough to both power and charge your Air. …read full discussion

Adhesive Solar Panels Drastically Reduce Installation Costs

Andrew Liszewski | posted on June 16, 2008

Power-Ply 380 Roof Integrated Photovoltaic (RIPV) Module (Image courtesy DRI Energy)

If you’re still finding reasons why you can’t or won’t install a set of solar panels on your roof, these Power-Ply 380 modules should eliminate a few more excuses. Their most innovative feature is an adhesive backing which makes installation as easy as peel and stick. (Well maybe just a bit more difficult than that.) But since you don’t need to assemble a support frame, mounting structure or even drill holes in your roof, the Power-Ply modules reduce installation costs by up to 70% and reduce installation time by 30%. …read full discussion

SF Passes Largest City Solar Program in U.S. (Finally)

Craig Rubens | posted on June 11, 2008

After six months of hard-fought politicking, the San Francisco board of supervisors has finally approved the Solar Energy Incentive Program, the country’s largest municipal solar program. The program has been greenlighted for 10 years and has an annual budget of $3 million dollars. The money will be doled out as rebates in the form of tax incentives for private solar installations. Now the ordinance just needs approval from Mayor Newsom, who has been pushing for this program; it’s expected that the solar energy incentive program will be operational in the coming weeks.

Solar-powered cellphone kiosks for Ugandan women

Treehugger via RK | posted on May 20, 2008

Mobile phones are connecting people around the globe like never before, but the simple fact remains that they don’t work without electricity. In Uganda, which has one of the lowest levels of electricity in Africa, Motorola has launched an initiative to provide solar recharging stations that can be run by local, entrepreneurial women. …read full discussion
